There are many popular types of sinks that you can find for your kitchen renovation projects or a broken sink. Then comes the question of how to install one properly. While you should ask for professional service, you can do it yourself. Here is how to install a sink:
Installation Guide
Turn Off The Water Supply
The first thing that you should do is shut off the water supply to your kitchen sink. Find out the shut-off valves under your sink and twist them clockwise until you cannot twist anymore.
Remove The Old Sink
If you are going to install a new sink, then the old one has to be dismantled first. Loosen nuts that hold the sink in place from underneath the countertop using a basin wrench. After the nuts are loosened, slowly bring the sink down from the countertop position.
Prepare The Countertop
In this case, you will be required to prime the countertop before you install the new sink. This may include any modifications that may be required on the countertop, such as cutting out holes in the sink and faucet.
Test Fit The Sink
After the countertop has been prepared, it is important to install the new sink into the hole. Ensure that it is tight enough and that there is enough space for the faucet and the plumbing joints.
Apply Silicone Caulk
Before you fix the sink in position, you should apply a line of silicone sealant around the bottom of the sink lip. This will ensure that there is no water leakage between the sink and the countertop as well as providing a good finishing.
Set The Sink In Place
The sink should be slowly lowered into the countertop hole. Check if it is flat and that the caulk bead has been applied uniformly.
Secure The Sink
After that, fix the sink in the desired position and then screw the mount nuts from beneath the countertop. Do not over-tighten the nuts, as this will cause the sink or countertop to crack.
Connect The Plumbing
After the sink is stalled, the plumbing is connected next. Screw the faucet to the sink as directed by the manufacturer’s manual. Next, the water supply lines are fitted to the shut-off valves, which are usually located under the sink.
Test For Leaks
After all the pipes and hoses have been connected, open the water supply and look for any dripping. Check for signs of leakage around the base of the faucet, the drain connections, and around the outer edge of the sink.
Caulk The Rim
If there are none, use a caulk gun to apply a bead of silicone caulk around the sink’s edge where it connects to the countertop. This will give it a polished look and protect it from water damage.
